This is a 1x1 table with no border. It was created with a border, then the text was added, then the cursor was placed in the text, then the Borders and Shading dialog was entered, then the None setting was selected and applied to the whole table.

This is a 1x1 table created in the same way, except that the None setting was applied only to the cell.
